Salmestone children see David Hockney’s Sunley Window at Turner Contemporary Gallery

A group of Kemnal pupils from Salmestone Primary School have been among the first to see the new commission at The Turner Contemporary Gallery in Margate -  a huge window by nationally acclaimed artist David Hockney.

The double-height window features a digital image of a countryside scene, at sunrise. Made from coloured vinyl, it acts like a stained glass window.

The window – drawn by Hockney using an iPad – aims to inspire young people to have a go at this new way of making art, and the Salmestone pupils were all treated to an iPad drawing lesson while at the gallery.

The visit to the Turner Gallery was part of the 2025 'We Can Do Art' project to support art-based teaching and learning in primary schools over the next 2 years.

The Paul Hamlyn Foundation's generous funding is enabling the Gallery, its education team and its Art practitioners to work with TKAT's 8 primary schools in Kent and Medway over the next 2 academic years.

Teachers and their classes from each school will visit the Gallery twice a year to enjoy an exciting workshop with an Artist and the Gallery's education team. The Artists also visit the children in their schools every year. The purpose of the project is to develop all the teachers in a primary school and to boost their skills and confidence for delivering excellent arts-based teaching and learning.

The Hockney window can be viewed at Turner from 1 April – 1 November 2026.
