Local MP Polly Billington joins Drapers Mills pupils to champion road safety campaign
Polly Billington, Member of Parliament for East Thanet, visited Drapers Mills Primary Academy in Margate recently to meet with the school’s safeguarding ambassadors. The meeting was part of their renewed push for road safety awareness in the local community.
Drapers Mills Primary Academy was the first school in Kent to launch a School Streets scheme in 2020. By temporarily restricting motorised traffic outside the school during drop-off and pick-up times, the school hopes to create a safer, healthier and happier environment, reduce pollution, congestion and improve road safety.
During Polly’s visit, the children shared their desire to move towards a more sustainable camera enforced scheme.
Polly said: “It was great to meet the safeguarding ambassadors and hear about their concerns for the road safety at the school and how it impacts their community. I will be writing to KCC in support and speaking to my colleagues at Thanet District Council to also support the efforts.”
Headteacher Hannah Taylor said: "We are grateful to Polly for visiting us and, most importantly, for listening to our pupils. Road safety is a top priority for our school community, and having the support of our local MP is a huge boost to our efforts to make the route to school safer for our children."
